In the fall of 2004, a 13 acre farm was purchased in northern New York by a daughter and mother team, Kimberly and Ginny Bloss. It was a dream of Kimberly, who had been into horses with her mother for 30 years to breed and raise family oriented, registered Morgan horses. Kim named the farm, Tantius Farm. The love of the Morgan horse came from having the pleasure of owning Jaklee Mr T, a registered Morgan gelding for 18 years. The first few months, the farm was known as the “geriatric barn” as the four horses there were all over 17 yrs old. They consisted of three registered Quarter horses, two of which Ginny had bred and raised, a registered Quarter horse mare owned by Sandy Demma and the one Morgan gelding, Jaklee Mr T owned by Kimberly.
In the spring of 2005, we received a call regarding three registered Morgans that were in a private barn in a neglectful situation. The county would do nothing to help them. When Ginny went to see them, she found one 7 year old gelding, who was a no. 1 on the Henneke scale, meaning all bones; a 13 year old mare that was about a 2 on the scale and a 3 year old stallion that had been in his stall for 10 months standing on three feet of manure and broken boards. The 3 year old looked more like a yearling. Arrangements were made to purchase them and temporary stalls were hastily built in the barn so they could be brought to Tantius Farm. Many nights were spent in the barn the first few weeks to be sure these neglected horses would survive. Original plans were to get them healthy and find new homes, however, after seeing and feeling what they had gone through, it was decided they would become permanent residents of Tantius Farm.
The dream of a breeding farm was slowly being transformed as Kim and Ginny became more involved in horse rescue through a group in Pennsylvania known as “Another Chance 4 Horses” a non-profit 501 © (3) that goes to New Holland Auction in PA and rescues horses from the slaughter truck slated for human consumption in European countries. They also take in horses from neglectful situations, abuse and surrenders. Through AC4H and Forevermorgans group, Tantius Farm has assisted in the rescue of several registered and grade Morgans.
Tantius Farm added another Morgan, Wilma, to their group in December 2005, from New Holland Auction and December 2007 added an elderly Amish work horse, Buster. Buster worked his whole life on the farm and when he became too old, was taken to the auction. Buster is in his late 20’s early 30’s and will spend his remaining life at Tantius Farm Equine Sanctuary. In the summer of 2008, EB Topcat came to the farm at age 27, after being placed in three different homes within a three month period. They just weren't working out and we were notified of his situation. He is now here, happy and settled in and will live out his remaining days.
Three women, Kim and Ginny, and cousin Sandy run Tantius Farm Equine Sanctuary. We have been fortunate to have had help in restructing the barn with horse stalls and a wonderful neighbor who lets us fence in 3 acres for additional pasture.
We would like to thank everyone who has helped us at the farm: Don Bloss & the "Experienced" crew at Bloss Heating & Air Conditioning, who are always ready to help repair or build something we need. Jeb & Bob Asmus for their electrical help. Jim Humbert & JNJ Construction for helping repair the barn roof. Allison Humbert, Cassidy Wilson, Donnie Farewell, The Davises,Travis Joss - not to mention the great people who bale our hay and our farriers too. Ginny Wickham Brown, for all her guidance and training. A huge thank you to Mr and Mrs. Ray for letting us fence in some of their land for additional pasture. Thanks so much! We appreciate you!
